Wirecard: A Tale of Fraud and Personal Resilience

In June 2020, Wirecard, a darling of the European technology scene, became bankrupt after an unprecedentedly large balance sheet gap was revealed. As a board member who initiated committees and brought several expert teams to investigate risk management and compliance practices of the now infamous FinTech, Dr. Lauterbach got caught in the middle of the turmoil, incapable of speaking out on what was happening with the company due to the law of secrecy around the boardrooms.

As a consequence, Dr. Lauterbach stepped down from all her supervisory board positions and closed her consultancy business in Germany.

In the following 12 months, Dr. Lauterbach was cruelly vilified by the press, receiving countless death and violence threats. Her personal data and even pictures of her young daughter were all over the Dark Web. Despite never being accused of wrongdoing by prosecutors or legal firms, Dr. Lauterbach was spending all her savings on attorneys. One year after Wirecard bankruptcy, Dr. Lauterbach left Germany and embarked on a personal and professional turnaround journey. She fired her legal team, created a company with a focus on educating families and businesses about AI, and was inducted into Hall of Fame for business excellence by the Business Excellence Institute in Dublin in 2024.
